What’s On In Birmingham in January, February and March 2020?
The period after Christmas and the New Year can feel a little flat, but busy, buzzy Brum is the city that keeps giving. Take a look at what’s on in Birmingham over January, February and March 2020. Start the year with the fun you deserve!
January
1) Peter Pan Reimagined at Birmingham Rep until Jan 19
This edgy reworking of a classic show has had great reviews in the national press. It’s a great show to consider if your kids are a bit old for a traditional panto. You can read a glowing review from the Birmingham Post here. The Guardian also gave it 4 stars.
2) Chinese New Year from Jan 24-26
Birmingham has a thriving China Town and it becomes even more vibrant in late January when Chinese New Year is celebrated. In 2020, nearby Birmingham Hippodrome will add to the traditional celebrations with a series of events to welcome the Year of the Rat. Some of these events will take place right next to our Rotunda serviced apartments in the Bullring and Grand Central. You’ll be able to enjoy Chinese cultural delights such as lion and dragon dances, fan and umbrella dances and the acclaimed Shaolin Warriors.
3) The National Running Show at the NEC Jan 25-26
Has running ever been more popular than it is now in the UK? The National Running Show caters to all levels of runner whether you are just starting or have a clutch of marathons under your belt. There’s a whole host of superstar speakers lined up including Linford Christie, Steve Cram, Sally Gunnell, Iwan Thomas and Jo Pavey. All the latest tech gadgets will be on show from all the big name brands as well as some smaller ones and you can improve your running style using any of the 19 interactive exercises. Tickets are free but you do need to pre-register.

4) Snow White and the Seven Dwarves at Birmingham Hippodrome until Feb 2
Panto time goes on well after Christmas at the Birmingham Hippodrome. This classic panto has had rave reviews such as “Where is the fairest panto in all the land? At Birmingham Hippodrome of course… an amazing show and perfect family entertainment which I could watch over and over again” (Derbyshire Telegraph). This year’s stars are Lesley Joseph, Matt Slack, Joe McElderry, and Faye Brookes. Tickets from £17.00
5) Birmingham Swing Festival from February 7-9
A must for swing dance fans (balboa, lindy hop, shag and solo jazz) with live music and crash courses available for beginners. Birmingham Swing Festival is just the thing to perk up the start of Feb with a Grand Ball on Saturday 8th Feb at Birmingham’s beautiful Town Hall which is just 400 metres away from our Rotunda home.
Valentine’s Day

6) You could stay traditional and book a table at one of Birmingham’s many great restaurants for you and your Valentine. However, we’d also like to suggest something a bit different. 7) How about Matthew Bourne’s The Red Shoes at Birmingham Hippodrome? 8) If film is your thing then how about surprising them with tickets for Howl’s Moving Castle with Studio Gibli inspired drinks (Feb 23rd)? 9) Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery (BMAG) is also hosting a Valentine’s Dinner on Feb 14th in its beautiful Industrial Gallery with live music. A quirky and classy surprise for your beloved. 10) And if you want to go for full-on romance then a Valentine’s Celebration of Music and Dance with Birmingham Royal Ballet should tick that box.

11) Verve at the Birmingham Hippodrome from Feb 20-23
Birmingham’s mighty spoken word and poetry festival hits town has grown to be so successful over the past few years that it is moving to the Birmingham Hippodrome. Not so long ago it was taking place in Waterstone’s book shop right opposite Staying Cool in Rotunda Square. The Verve team has done brilliant work in developing it. 12) Crufts at NEC Birmingham from March 5-8
If dogs are your thing then you really must come to Crufts! It offers much more than the well-known competition to be Supreme Champion such as Friends for Life, Scruffts and (our favourite) the agility teams.
13) Gymnastics World Cup at Arena Birmingham from March 28
Look on in wonder while the world’s top gymnasts perform in Birmingham.
Birmingham boy Joe Fraser made history in 2019 by becoming world champion on the parallel bars. This made him the first British gymnast to win a medal on that apparatus at a world championships. Joe will lead the British men’s challenge alongside GB teammate Giarnni Regini-Moran. Tickets start at £38.50 for adults
