New bars and restaurants in Birmingham this summer
With a host of new food and drink venues opening in Birmingham this year, you’ve picked the perfect time to book a summer city break at our Rotunda Aparthotel
Here’s a selection of Birmingham bars and restaurant newcomers, all within walking distance of our Rotunda aparthotel, to whet your appetite:
1. Summer in the Square
Some of Birmingham’s best restaurants and coffee shops are serving their signature dishes and drinks from colourful beach huts at the first-ever Summer in the Square event, which takes place Thursdays to Saturdays throughout June, July and August 2021.
Held in the city’s Victoria Square, a hop, skip and a jump from Rotunda, Summer in the Square also features lots of free outdoor seating and a bandstand for live music so visitors can kick back and enjoy the architectural backdrop of the Town Hall, Council House and Museum and Art Gallery.
The first confirmed food and drink vendors are local independent Indian restaurant Asha’s, steak restaurant Gaucho and independent coffee shops Java Roastery and Yorks Cafe, who are all serving between 11am-8pm Thursday-Saturday. To check the latest Summer in the Square dates and vendors on the Colmore Business District website.
2. Rosa’s Thai Cafe
Dishoom became the go-to new restaurant in the city centre when it opened, with views across the new-look Chamberlain Square in 2020 and now, hot on its heels and just a few yards away, comes the lovely Rosa’s Thai Café for 2021.
It’s the family restaurant group’s first ever Midlands venue, near the Grade I-Listed Town Hall and Grade II-Listed Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.
Rosa serves fresh, homemade Thai food seven days a week along with delivery and takeaway every day, so you can enjoy wonderful food in the comfort of your Rotunda apartment too.
3. The Pineapple Club
Located in gorgeous Great Western Arcade, Pineapple Club’s launch was impacted by the coronavirus closures but now they’re here, they’re doing great things with cocktails, craft beer and… mead.
The venue, a new local favourite of some of the Staying Cool team, showcases a bright and bold interior with neon signage (perfect for Instagram!) and the cocktail menu features all the classics, often with a twist.
And with summer holidays on hold, we’re here for the Paella Party… sharing-dish paella with any two cocktails for £28 (check out their website for availability).
3. Manahatta
Temple Street’s cluster of bars and restaurants will be home to a new Manahatta cocktail bar when the six-strong chain opens in the former Maplins electronics store.
Manahatta will be joining the likes of The Botanist, Flight Club, Head of Steam, The Trocadero and numerous others in a booming hospitality area between New Street station and Birmingham Cathedral.
Manahatta will be opening in October 2021, with New York-inspired cocktails, light lunches, bottomless brunches and a US-inspired menu in the evening.
4. Luna Springs
Replacing Digbeth Arena, Luna Springs is a new open-air venue at Lower Trinity Street in Digbeth.
Luna Springs takes its name from the Lunar Society – Birmingham’s forward-thinking group of industrialists and scientists who met for informal gatherings every full moon in the late 1700s.
It is owned by London-based bar group Adventure Bar Group which also owns cocktail bar Tonight Josephine (see below).
Luna Springs offers moonlight cinema screenings, bottomless brunches, live performances, cocktails and collaborations with Digbeth’s brilliant street-food traders and independent food providers.

5. Tonight Josephine
If Bottomless Burlesque Brunch doesn’t catch your eye, nothing will!
Tonight Josephine has opened on Stephenson Street, right opposite New Street station and Grand Central.
Look out for a range of events including Full House Bingo hosted by drag queens, a Bottomless Porn Star Martini Afternoon Tea and Josephine’s Showgirl Brunch, described as ‘the brunch you have been waiting for!’ with bottomless prosecco, bingo and a sexy Burlesque show because you deserve it.
